How to Check Your Internet and Wi-Fi
Is it the computer, the Wi-Fi or the internet? Let us find out.
Before you call for IT support, a few checks will show where the problem lies. Often it is the router, not the computer.
Step by step
- Check another device, such as a phone on Wi-Fi. If that works, the fault is with the computer.
- If nothing works, switch the router off, wait 30 seconds and switch it on. Give it three minutes.
- Look at the lights on the router. A red or flashing light usually means the fault is with your provider.
- Move closer to the router and try again.
- On the computer, turn Wi-Fi off and on again.
- In Windows 11, open Settings, then System, Troubleshoot, Other troubleshooters, and run Network and Internet.
What the result means
- Everything works after restarting the router: it was the router. If it keeps happening, the router may need replacing.
- Other devices work but one computer does not: that computer needs attention. See IT support.
- Nothing works and the router shows a fault light: call your internet provider.
