Computer Making Strange Noises
Your computer is trying to tell you something.
Clicking, grinding, buzzing, whining: every noise has a meaning. Some are harmless. One of them, a clicking drive, should stop you in your tracks.
Safe checks to try first
- Work out where the noise comes from: drive, fan or power supply
- If it is a rhythmic click from the drive, switch off now
- A rattle that changes with the fan is usually dust or a worn bearing
- A whine or buzz from the back points to the power supply
Stop if you smell burning, hear clicking from the drive, or the computer has been wet. Switch it off and call 020 7237 6805.
